Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president and Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said foreigners who had been long-time residents in Sabah could be considered for Permanent Residence (PR) status in accordance with the laws of the country.
However, the Member of Parliament for Keningau and State Assemblyman for Tambunan said illegal immigrants without proper jobs and documents should be deported as soon as possible.
Speaking to reporters after witnessing the swearing-in ceremony of the Keningau District councillors, the former Chief Minister also pointed out that a PR status could not guarantee citizenship status unless further rigid regulations could be complied.
Pairin was commenting on a statement by Philippine Migrant Affairs Undersecretary Esteban Conejos in Kuala Lumpuer yesterday in which he proposed that Filipinos nationals to be given PR rather than deporting them en mass.
Conejos said that Philippines officials had met with their Malaysian counterparts over the planned mass deportation of thousands of Filipinos now staying illegally in Sabah.
The Philippines Government wanted Malaysia to grant PR status to Filipinos who had lived in Malaysia for a long time.
Meanwhile, Pairin said the Sabah Government would continue to welcome Filipinos seeking jobs and greener pastures in Sabah provided they have valid documents and travel papers.

On Aug 4th, 1988, Pairin then Chief Minister told a forum on `The problem of illegal immigrants in Sabah' held in Keningau that the people of Sabah could not accept the continued presence of such a large number of aliens in Sabah.
Pairin said unless the problem was resolved, the people of Sabah would continue to live in anxiety and fear.
"We owe it to ourselves and our future generations to take concrete actions now to remedy the situation. Let us work out the framework for a solution to the problem at hand," Pairin said.
And that was 20 years ago!!!

...it's just that the Spirit of Kinoringan has left Pairin! Divine wisdom shied away from him and enter worldly wisdom which makes him say nonsensical matters!

BN must down!!! that all we need, politic and religion separation also what we need. I don't think Pairin change his mind.. i trust the dictator UMNO force almost all the politician in Malaysia to follow what UMNO want only (hidden from public)... and threat anyone with law (fake issue) if they don't obey.
One of the big big framework for UMNO politic agenda is... Malaysia Islamization.
UMNO can hide all the fact, but not the impact. We can see the pattern..
What Our Beloved Keningau MP and Dusun/Kadazan Huguan Siou Datuk SP J Pairin Kitingan said 20 years ago has not changed except for the more logical and legitimate definition of who must go and who could be considered PR. Many Sabahans including Kadazan/Dusuns/Muruts/Runggus were accorded PR and citizenship in countries/land/pastures where they lived now - "greener" than Sabah.
The PTI issue was the reason Pairin came out abused - fighting for us and He has not given up the very "REASON" for PBS's coming into being ; even until his age now "many disliked him to "stay" for whtever reason.
Your irky and provocating insinution that he has changed stand (Which other personalities seemed championing now) might be overstated. The complication of the issue, I reckoned, was dragged this far obviously due much to the splintering of Datuk Pairin's own proteges into many rewarding streams of the divide and rule policy.

Datuk Pairin is just too charismatic that most adore and some felt otherwise for whatever reasons. He has gone through 540 degree in the political playfield, unlike the novice arm chair champions of doom who attributed their weakness to others.
