Sabah former Chief Minister Datuk Osu Haji Sukam's bid to his former post as head of the Papar Umno division failed yesterday when he only managed to get 183 votes against the 218 polled by Pantai Manis assemblyman Datuk Haji Abdul Rahim Issmail.
Osu, who is also a former Papar Member of Parliament, was the division's head until 2005 when he was forces to resign after it was reported that he owed RM7 million to two casinos in London.
Upon his resignation, Rahim, who was then Osu's deputy, was made acting head of the division.
Rahim was Sabah Agriculture and Food Industry Minister until the March 8, 2008 general election. Although he retained his Pantai Manis seat, he was dropped from the State Cabinet.
He had since been appointed Malaysia Fisheries Authority's chairman.
